The more my family travels—especially on cruises—the more I appreciate the little things that make a trip easier. These items have become what I like to call our “joy savers.”
When you’re traveling as a family, you’re sharing a much smaller space than you do at home. Cruise cabins can get crowded quickly! Finding a place for everyone’s things and keeping devices charged helps keep the friction low and the happiness high.
These are the Amazon cruise finds we love, along with a few extras worth considering for your family.
1. Magnetic hooks
These little hooks make it easier to keep things off the floor and give everyone a place for the items they need to grab quickly. Hats, lanyards, and lightweight bags are much easier to find when they have a home! Use them on compatible metal surfaces, and check their weight limits. FIND HERE
2. A clear hanging organizer
When the whole family is sharing one small bathroom, counter space disappears quickly. I love having a place to tuck away sunscreen, toiletries, and all those little things that otherwise end up everywhere. Clear pockets make it easy to see what you need. Check your cruise line’s rules for hanging organizers before packing one. FIND HERE
3. Retractable lanyards
On sailings that use ship cards, these give everyone a convenient place to keep theirs. A card sleeve is a simple option that doesn’t require punching a hole in the card. FIND HERE
4. A multi-port USB charger
Cameras, AirPods, phones, watches, iPads, Kindles—the list of things we charge on vacation adds up fast.
Cruise cabins have outlets, but when several family members have several devices, someone always seems to need a turn. Making charging easier is one of those small things that helps everyone get along a little better!
Check your cruise line’s current rules before choosing a charger, since policies vary. FIND HERE
5. A portable charger
My husband bought a solar-powered portable charger a few years ago for a family vacation, and it quickly became a favorite with everyone.
Having backup power when we’re away from an outlet is so helpful. And the idea of using sunshine to recharge is pretty darn awesome—because, let’s be honest, we can often find some sunshine on vacation!
If you choose a solar model, check how long solar charging takes and charge it fully before heading out. FIND HERE
6. Sea-Band wristbands
Even if motion sickness isn’t usually an issue for you, the rocking of the ship can sometimes catch you off guard.
I like that these don’t involve swallowing a pill or finding water to take one. They’re an option to consider, although results vary. Check the age guidance, and ask your child’s healthcare professional about suitable seasickness options for little ones. FIND HERE
7. A motion-sensor night light
A little light can make a big difference when someone needs the bathroom in the middle of the night. A battery-powered option is especially handy in an inside cabin, where there’s no window to let in any light. FIND HERE
8. A sunrise alarm clock
If your kids do better with a little light in the morning, this is an extra to consider for an inside cabin. It gradually brightens the room to help ease everyone into the day. FIND HERE
9. A light cardigan
Sunshine outside doesn’t always mean you’ll be warm inside! A light cardigan is easy to bring along for dinner or a show when you want an extra layer.FIND HERE
10. Waterproof phone pouches
My kids absolutely love these. They love taking pictures and videos on their phones, and so many of our vacation activities happen around water.
We have some pretty amazing videos from using ours, and I love that they’ve been an affordable addition to our vacation gear. Check the pouch’s water-use limits and test the seal before putting your phone inside. FIND HERE
11. An insulated tumbler with a lid
A cold drink on a warm pool or beach day just hits the spot. A tumbler helps keep it cold, and a secure lid helps with spills when you’re carrying everyone’s things. FIND HERE
12. Wrinkle-release spray
Sometimes an outfit needs a little help after being packed! Wrinkle-release spray is a handy extra for getting ready for dinner or family pictures. Follow the fabric directions and check your cruise line’s packing rules.FIND HERE
You don’t need to buy everything on this list. Think about the little things that tend to cause frustration when your family travels, and start there.
For us, having a place for everyone’s stuff and making sure we aren’t fighting over charging devices goes a long way. Less time looking for things means more time enjoying the vacation we came for!
Before packing, check your cruise line’s current rules—especially for chargers, electrical items, and hanging organizers.
Planning your first family cruise? Let’s talk! I’d love to help you find a vacation your family will be excited about.
